Montrale Boykin currently serves as the Department Co-Chair and a faculty member in the Healthcare Management Department at Winston-Salem State University. The department includes an undergraduate program and the Master of Health Administration program. In his role as co-chair, he is responsible for classroom instruction, advising, day-to-day department operations, assisting students toward successful program completion, helping maintain/grow student enrollment and fiscal responsibility of the program. He has taught in both the Division of Nursing (Success Strategies I & II) and in the Healthcare Management Program .The curriculum of the Master of Health Administration program was redesigned in 2015 and was developed based on a competency model with an emphasis on leadership. Dr. Boykin worked with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders on the program’s design. Dr. Boykin also led the effort for the initial certification of the undergraduate Healthcare Management by the Association of University Program in Healthcare Administration in 2017 and recertification in 2020.

Prior to the appointment of Department Chair in August 2012, he served as the Contract Coordinator for the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. As Contract Coordinator he was responsible for drafting, researching, negotiating and analyzing all contracts in the School of Health Sciences before submission to the Office of Legal Affairs. He served in the legal and healthcare fields for the past seventeen years. Prior to joining Winston-Salem State University he worked in a civil litigation law firm that focused on personal injuries, medical negligence, contract law, worker’s compensation, and employment discrimination.

Montrale Boykin graduate Magna Cum Laude with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration from North Carolina Central University and a post baccalaureate certificate in Health Administration from East Carolina University. He also earned a Juris Doctor degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law.

Dr. Boykin is a member of the American Bar Association, The Association of University Programs in Health Administration, The American College of Healthcare Executives, American Health Lawyers Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Immediate Past President of The National Society of Allied Health. He is also the recipient of the Triad Business Journal’s 40 Leaders under Forty and North Carolina Central Forty under Forty Alumni Award. His experience and research interest are in healthcare policy, competency-based education, the legal aspects of healthcare and increasing diversity in healthcare administration.
